Supporting Young People's Emotional Wellbeing
Kerry is a strong advocate for early intervention, recognising the vital role it plays in supporting the emotional wellbeing and development of young people. Kerry developed and delivered a number of eight-week music therapy programmes at St Catherine's College, supporting Year 7 and 8 students experiencing anxiety and those with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). These programmes used music as a therapeutic tool to promote emotional expression, self-awareness, confidence, and connection. Funded by Belltree and DCAT, the programme combined psychodynamic music therapy, EMDR-informed techniques and talking therapy in small groups of up to six students, providing a safe space to explore emotions, build self-awareness and develop positive relationships.
The programme's impact was measured using the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS), with results showing significant improvements across all cohorts. Within just eight weeks, 62% of participants demonstrated measurable improvements in mental wellbeing, while 90% reported reduced stress, improved mood, greater emotional understanding and increased confidence in asking for help. The project and data demonstrate the value of early therapeutic intervention within schools, particularly for students who benefit from dedicated, non-judgemental spaces to express themselves.
